1. Chalkboard paint. Never dirty another cookbook mid-preparation! Paint your backsplash with chalkboard paint and you can jot down recipes, grocery lists and gentle reminders for family members. "Honey, please remember the milk." Not only is this a fun way to spice up your kitchen, but it will bring out the creativity in you and your whole family.

2. Colored glass. Remember Tess Lloyd's renovated Sydney home? Her kitchen backsplash was made of a beautiful green-tinted glass that added a special (and necessary) pop of color in her kitchen. Its reflective surface adds depth and nicely reflects light.
