Flickr real life homes: Martha’s 1950’s Minneapolis home

Martha's 1950's Minneapolis home

Martha McQuade the designer behind the label UNIFORM Studio, lives in three bedroom, 1950's home in Minneapolis with her husband and two sons. Martha’s home felt spacious, light and airy so it was a surprise for me to learn that in fact it is only 1,100 sq ft ( 102 m2 ) of area.

If you follow my blog you will quickly come to the conclusion that I have a soft spot for mid-century modern style and enjoy writing about homes that have character and feel lived in. Martha’s homes definitely ticks all the boxes for me - the handpicked mid-century modern design pieces, a favourite with both Martha and her husband, add character and functional elegance to this beautiful home.

It is very easy for a small house to look uncluttered due to lack of storage space, however, this is not the case for Martha’s home. Keeping things neat and organized was a huge concern for her and her husband therefore, clever storage was built-in to the various rooms.

I love the makeover on L’s (the oldest son) bedroom. Martha wanted it to reflect his age and emerging interest: yellow (the beautiful Eames rocker), maps (the world map decal from Ferm Living), science, and birds. This resulted in a gorgeous bedroom full of personality for a little boy to grow up in.

The dramatic use of black against the pristine white, such as the wallpapered accent wall in the master bedroom is also a favourite as is the beautiful screen from Vitra hanging against the black painted brick fireplace in the living area - absolutely stunning!

You can check out the full set of photos in Flickr, read about Martha’s creative process in her blog and check out her clothing collection at her shop.

The entangled lights over the fireplace are briliant. It must be amazing when they are lit at night. I wonder where she got it.

Dolce far niente - The piece on the fireplace is actually not a light fixture.
It is just a sculptural like screen.
It is made of small pieces that snap together.
It is called Algue and made by Vitra.
