Mari's beautiful rental apartment

Mari a native of Tokyo, Japan - “where everyone is used to smaller spaces” -  shares a small rental apartment ( 69 square metres = 750 square feet ) in California with her husband and two cats. Moving in to this apartment motivated her to learn more about home décor and Flickr was at the top of her inspiration sources along with the laid back yet sophisticated French interiors from one of her favourite books.

“Country Cottage” was the original style she went for but it was difficult to keep the space functional and practical so it evolved in to a very contemporary mix of Ikea pieces, some DIY pieces and a few hand-me-downs, like the red and green sofa in the living room she managed to convert to a thing of beauty with a simple slip cover.

Mari enjoys the challenges of making her small rental into a lovely light and airy home and takes storage  and order very seriously. She has purchased dozens of boxes and baskets to keep her stuff neatly put away in logical places -  “I want every office-related things to be in the office, kitchen items in the kitchen, not in the bedroom under the bed or under the couch in the living room etc.” she says.

My favourites are the baskets she uses to store CDs, DVDs and games and the adorable bird stamp labels Mari uses to identify them. Check out her home set in Flickr and pick your own favourites.
